International Year of Light 2015 Literary competition “Words and Light”

The International Year of Light 2015 Literary competition “Words and Light”, organized by the Executive Secretary of the St. Petersburg IYL 2015 Committee, invites you to write about Light and any phenomena and/or feeling connected to it. The literary competition is a tribute to all the writers who were inspired by Light, writers who were interested in the Science of Light, and scientists who were also poets. The deadline for entries is 31 March 2015.

“…There is a certain light that darkness cannot extinguish…”

    (Ivan Bunin, 1927)

What does Light mean for you?

Light has always inspired writers – think about how Dostoyevsky or Bunin, first Russian Nobel Laureate in Literature, described Light in their works, how writers such as Goethe and Strindberg were interested in the Science of Light and wrote about Optics, and how scientists such as Lomonosov were also poets.

The International Year of Light 2015 Literary competition “Words and Light” is dedicated to the grammar book by Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov written in 1755 which reformed the Russian literary language by combining Old Church Slavonic with the vernacular, and to the book “Theory of Colours” (Zur Farbenlehre) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, published in 1810, which contains detailed descriptions of phenomena such as coloured shadows, refraction, and chromatic aberration.

The deadline to submit your entries is 31 March 2015. Works may be submitted in any literary form (poem, short story, essay, drama, etc.) in Russian, English, German or Portuguese. The competition is open to everyone, from anywhere in the world.

When you submit your work, write your full name, your contact details, and include information about published works (if any).

The best works will be determined by a jury and will be published in an anthology dedicated to the International Year of Light 2015.

Please, send your texts by email to: light@my.ifmo.ru

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today. The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
